PIPED Act

This is a Canadian law that relates to data privacy. This is referred to as the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documentation Act (PIPEDA or PIPED Act). This law provides regulations, for private companies, about the use and disclosure Public Interest Immunity (PII) in the course of business. This law also specifies how to use and handle electronic documents.

The law requires organizations:

  • Should ask for consent before collecting information and they should also explain why they require this information and how it will be used.
  • Should not use the collected personal information other than that for which users have consented. They are supposed to use the personal information reasonably and appropriately.
  • Should state a responsible point of contact for protecting all the personal information.
  • Should specify the security measures followed to protect the information.
  • Should collect all personal information by lawful procedures.

The law gives inpiduals the right to:

  • Understand the reasons why the organization collects their personal information
  • Understand how the organization is collecting their personal Information
